If all the people in prison were placed on treadmills how much electricity could they generate?
By admin | March 25, 2010
Seems to me to be a good way for criminals to put something back into Society .
Nothing too strenuous,of course.
16 hours treadmill; 8 hours "Kip"
Hi Guys!
If you think it’s sick
If you think it’s not humane
If you think it’s punishment
If you think it’s against their ‘Uman Rites"
THEN WHY do people join expensive Clubs and Gyms and pay a fortune to march up and down on a treadmill !
All you’re doing is allowing the "Cons" to do what Rich, Privileged People DO!
NOWT wrong with that? Surely?
Howdy, Hi_Y’all
Once got suspended for asking about smoking in Prison!
It was a TEXAN who complained!!!
Didn’t know you had %£% Bleedin’ ‘art Do-gooders in Texas. Bl**dy humorless Pansy!
Kind regards to you an’ all them little heifers!
Hey Melanie
Don’t forget the very good Fish, Chips, and Mushy Peas on Friday Tea-time!
Hi gcnp58
Ask anyone who worked on the Burma Railroad how many hours a Human can work on a bowl of rice.
Why the concern about their health ?
Did they get a doctor to examine their Victims?
Hey Gcrip58
A war crime? The people who did this are now literally WORSHIPPED in Japan!

Good Idea.

i think you my be onto somthing here!
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
That’s an inspired idea. I think you should contact the Home Office to see if it can be implemented.

Sounds good !
Enough to power the prison or they can all sit in the dark and starve !
Waste of space criminals, burn the lot of them !
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Probably enough to warm the jacuzzis in their cells.
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Lmao. vincent for prime minister!!!
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Ok that’s really sick. They don’t deserve this. Being caged is bad enough.
Edit **In response to the others, you people are so stupid. They don’t get a pool, jacuzzi, higher education, etc.. They just appreciate getting the sun to shine on them or the wind in their hair when they go out into the yard for 1 hour a day or less. Other than that, I’ve heard one movie a week, and some newspapers. The worst is not getting to see or hear from friends and family. All of this is bad enough! I am surprised that you all are not in prison with lack of human decency. Why don’t you try to understand criminals instead of hating them

It’s an interesting question. I’ve also wondered if gyms could harvest the energy from all the steppers/spinners/joggers in their facility. I’m afraid I don’t know the answer to your question, but I’ll tell you something interesting I read. The first crude treadmills were developed for use in prisons as punishment. At that time people couldn’t think of a worse feeling than for someone to expend a lot of energy and realize it was going for nothing. The useless-ness of the activity was considered brutal punishment.
Addition: Your question, and the answers to it, are a perfect example of interesting dialog vs stupidity. Your initial question was asked without malice or exaggeration or injecting falsehoods to ask a reasonable question. Some of the answers demonstrate a childish willingness to over-exaggerate to make a point. Which makes their whole argument invalid. (Does anyone actually believe there are jacuzzis in jail cells? If not, using it as an argument reflects on the user, not the original question). And remember, every time you mock human rights, you mock everyone who has died to uphold the values of the US Constitution. The Bill of Rights was invoked to protect people from petty sadistic tyrants who would use any made-up argument to punish those who disagreed with them. Remind you of anyone?

V good idea, keep ‘em fit too.
Think you’re a bit misinformed Melanie. A mate of mine is a prison warder at a maximum security prison near here. It’s the place they send, murderers, sex offenders and paedophiles. They have phones and TV in each cell and when one of them bit a prison guard, they couldn’t get him to reveal whether he had Aids, hepatitis etc because his lawyer said it would be an infringement of his human rights. Didn’t seem to matter a jot about the warder who had to undergo a serious of painful tests to see if he’d caught anything.
What about his human rights!

What a good idea.

It would depend on the gear set up , Hy did Hitler try this on the Jews. how much can you generate find out and do the math .Jest make sure you do this for a full 30 day so you have a solid average ,
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
You mean deprive them of pool, the Internet and free higher education/training etc etc the rest of us have to shell out hundreds for?
Atrocious!
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Wow.
An inhuman but in some ways a decent idea. I don’t know how much electricity it would generate.
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Damn good idea . Once in a wile we get a genius in yahoo answers
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
LOL!!
Going of you though for that one Vince.
It’s hardly rehabilitating is it.
Should they run real fast at execution time?
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Yes, but they’d be better off geting them working on an organic farm doing all the weeding.
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
what an interesting idea…
although i haven’t the foggiest how much it would generate..
for those who think it’s sick; are prisoners supposed to have punishment or hotel service??
they’ve got to repay society SOMEHOW.. why not in an environmentally friendly way?
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Bad Boy Vincent strikes again!!!
Edit…..
Hey, as long as I’m not in prison GO AHEAD! Sounds Great to me!!!
A lot of them deserve MUCH, MUCH WORSE!!!
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Great idea but like most all good ideas, I think only lawyers would benefit. Shame. They could run treadmills too, placed between their offices and their bank accounts.
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
I have thought about this before. Unfortunately, they are human, and would need a sufficient amount of food(their energy source) to be real effective, and you need plenty of energy to produce food. The net energy gained, would probably be minimal at best if not taking a loss in energy.
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
Realistically, you can only get about 12 hrs per day of continuous physical exertion out of a human day in and day out. Figure 200 W per person, so five people would generate a 12 kilowatt/hrs/day. If you had a 10,000 person prison running two 12-hr shifts of 5,000 prisoners each, that’s only 12 MW/hrs/day. This might have a hope of commercial viability in terms of power output, but there are other factors to consider.
For 200 W output, a human might burn around 800 Cal/hr, for 9600 cals/day for the exercise and then 2000 Cal/day for basal metabolism. If you don’t feed them that much, they will starve rapidly and their energy production will fall off. They would have to be monitored closely for dehydration and vitamin deficiencies, and long-term endurance exercise like this puts strain on the body’s immune system. In other words, they would be prone to viral infections, which would sweep through the population. The health costs would be astronomical, and the cost for food and drink would be even larger. Figuring in the energy cost for food production, you likely wouldn’t even break even in terms of generation.
edit: Sweet. You want to recreate something that was a war crime.
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
I’d say that if we relied on that we would not have electricity
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
IT WOULD not work, as you would use more power to generate power than the power you produce.
March 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
HA..HA…!Give them something constructive to do and they’d be providing a valuable service to the community instead of draining it of its funds.!..I should imagine it would provide the whole country, but who could stand there all day with a big whip….unless electric shock treament was used the minute they stopped for a rest.!I would certianly lie to see that.!..They used that technique on hamsters, and it worked a treat, and inmates are less intelligent than hamsters…so I heard.!
